Daily Living: A little different than yours

Just People

I had a friend who was very sensitive when it came to death. Her brother died while in his prime and it weighed heavily on her. She liked to travel. The year was 1990 or 1991 when she traveled to Hungary – maybe just after some turbulent times. She spoke about Auschwitz with tears coming into her eyes and then she said that the Hungarian people are just people trying to get food on the table and raise their children just like everyone else. Every now and then, I think of her "just people" comment although these days I sometimes think this may not be the case with the “Me, Me, Me” generation. While traveling or not, take the time to look at the "people" going about their daily activities and how that differs from your daily activities...

The other day, at a Burmese restaurant, here, in Chiang Mai, I waited for my take-home order and had time to just stop and observe. A boy about 8 or 9 years of age was helping out in the family restaurant. He cleared and wiped the tables and later, he washed the dishes. Isn’t that great? He was helping out and working with the family. I smiled at the cook and waitress. They were proud of this boy.
