Appetizing Chiang Mai
Our Favorite Market Appetizers
Miiang-kam kits are available at various places. We usually get ours at Tanin (Siri wattana) Market or around the Northern Food court at Airport Plaza Shopping center. Take a leaf, spread some sauce in the center, top with coconut shreds, a dried shrimp, pieces of shallot, ginger, chili pepper, and peanut then fold everything closed and eat it in one bite.
The Northern sausage, Sai Oua, is very yummy. The one at Maehia Market is exceptional. We get a 100 bahts worth and ask them not to cut it into pieces. Then we head towards the food court and get a bag or two of cut pineapple. We slice the sausage into 3/4 inch rounds, heat them in the microwave and top them with chunks of pineapple. This market, also, has terrific nampriks (ong and E-ghea pictured here) and pork skins.
These appetizers are great with a regular martini or a copycat "House Martini" (has passion fruit juice)!
Fruit and Supermarket Appetizers
At Rim Ping and Top Supermarkets, we've found a couple of stuffed rice noodle appetizers that are pretty good with a cold beer or cocktail.
After appetizers from the market and supermarket, you might add some fruit and skip dinner altogether.
On the River Chiang Mai (2004)
We were on a boat in the Ping River when these photos were taken in 2004.
Brasserie (above), which is no longer there, was a famous late night place to see the great guitarist, "Tuk", have nice appetizing food and a cocktail.
Sompet Thai Cookery School (right), which is no longer there, was a great place to make appetizing Thai food and have fun learning about Thai food and cooking. A friend once said, "This is the best Thai food I've ever had and I made it!"
